Suraj's Story: A Medulloblastoma Survivor Thriving More Than 20 Years Later
A Full-Circle Moment
Suraj is now 27 years old, but our team first met him more than 20 years ago, when he was just 6 years old and came in emergently with a brain tumor. Seeing him again all these years later was a full-circle moment for everyone involved in his care.
Emergency Surgery in 2006
In 2006, Dr. Mark A. Mittler performed surgical resection of Suraj’s medulloblastoma, a type of malignant brain tumor that most often affects children. Surgery was followed by chemotherapy and radiation, the combined approach commonly used to treat this type of tumor.
Where Suraj Is Today
More than two decades later, Suraj is thriving. He graduated from college and is currently enrolled in a master’s degree program. He is more than 20 years out from his medulloblastoma and doing exceptionally well.
Why Stories Like Suraj’s Matter
For families facing a childhood brain tumor diagnosis, it can be hard to picture what the future holds. Suraj’s journey is a reminder of why we do what we do: seeing patients grow up, accomplish their goals, and reach for the stars is what it is all about.
