Dr. Mark A. Mittler is President of Long Island Neurosurgical Associates (LINA), Vice President of Northwell Health Pediatric Neurosurgical Services, and Chief of the Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery at Cohen Children’s Medical Center (CCMC). He is nationally recognized with over 26 years of experience caring for infants, children, and adolescents with complex neurosurgical conditions. His clinical focus and expertise include craniosynostosis, Chiari malformations, brain tumors, hydrocephalus, arteriovenous malformations, and tethered spinal cords.
Dr. Mittler oversees the outpatient and inpatient Pediatric Neurosurgery teams that ensure seamless and compassionate care around the clock. He plays a trusted role in strategic planning, programmatic development, and faculty recruitment throughout the Children’s Hospital, and is an integral Division leader within the broader Northwell Department of Neurosurgery. His efforts, along with his colleagues, have resulted in consistently top national rankings of CCMC Pediatric Neurosurgery in the annual U.S. News & World Report Children’s Hospital Survey.
Dr. Mittler is Associate Professor of Neurosurgery and Pediatrics at the Zucker School of Medicine at Hofstra/Northwell. He is a founding member of the School’s Core Admission Committee and has served on its Faculty Council. He is Site Director of the Hofstra/Northwell Neurosurgical Residency Program rotation at CCMC. An invited lecturer at regional and national conferences, he has authored numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters in pediatric neurosurgery.
A Long Island native, Dr. Mittler earned his undergraduate degree in Neuroscience at the University of Rochester, followed by medical school at the University of Rochester School of Medicine. He completed his Neurosurgery Residency at Brown University, where he developed his deep interest in pediatric neurosurgery. He went on to become the first Pediatric Neurosurgery fellow at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles. Dr. Mittler returned to the region in 1999 to join LINA—ultimately focusing his efforts at the hospital where he was born. His arrival helped expand the Pediatric Neurosurgery program at Schneider Children’s Hospital, which during this period transitioned to its current identity as Cohen Children’s Medical Center, gradually leading to the consolidation of pediatric neurosurgical services across Long Island at CCMC.
For the past 16 consecutive years, Dr. Mittler has been named a Castle Connolly Top Doctor in the New York Metro Area, and he is annually recognized as a Long Island Top Doctor by Newsday. His expertise has been featured in major news outlets, and he has been honored by multiple charitable and professional organizations. He has been individually profiled in New York Magazine regarding his humanistic approach to handling the complexities and responsibilities of becoming a pediatric neurosurgeon. Recognized for his clarity, compassion, and thoughtful decision-making, he is appreciated by families for his direct communication style, collaborative approach, and steadfast commitment to providing the most appropriate, individualized care for every child.
Dr. Mittler and his wife are proud of their three adult children—all of whom have impactful careers in healthcare-related fields. Beyond medicine, he is an avid portrait photographer, enjoys tennis and cycling, maintains a steadfast commitment to fitness, and is an unapologetically mediocre golfer.
