Mason's Story: Emergency Surgery for an Epidural Hematoma After a Hoverboard Fall

Meet Mason, a 10-Year-Old Who Needed Emergency Care
Mason, a 10-year-old boy, fell off a hoverboard and struck the back of his head. He was rushed to the emergency room at Cohen Children’s Medical Center, where the team quickly moved to find out how serious the injury was.
A Rapidly Enlarging Epidural Hematoma
A CT scan revealed a rapidly enlarging epidural hematoma. An epidural hematoma is bleeding between the skull and the protective covering of the brain. It can worsen quickly and become life-threatening, which makes fast diagnosis and treatment critical. It is one type of pediatric neurotrauma that requires immediate neurosurgical attention.
Life-Saving Emergency Surgery
Within moments of the scan, Dr. Steven J. Schneider, with the assistance of Dr. Alon Kashanian, brought Mason to the operating room for emergency, life-saving surgery. Quick recognition, rapid decision-making, and expert care made all the difference.
Back to Being a 10-Year-Old
Today, Mason is back doing what every 10-year-old should be doing. He also shares his story in his own words in the video below.

Why Mason’s Story Matters
An epidural hematoma can look like a simple bump on the head at first, yet worsen within hours. Mason’s case shows how much a fast CT scan, a rapid decision, and an experienced pediatric neurosurgical team can matter in a head injury emergency.
